Charlotte leaders ready for possible protests regarding Keith Scott shooting

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte city leaders say they are prepared for protests following Wednesday’s announcement regarding the Keith Lamont Scott shooting.

Sources told Channel 9 the district attorney’s office will announce Wednesday whether the officer who shot and killed Keith Scott will face charges.

Protest groups tell Channel 9 they are planning demonstrations Wednesday.

In the hours and days after the fatal police shooting of Scott, protesters filled Charlotte's streets.

Now a little more than two months later, demonstrations are planned pending the district attorney's announcement on whether the officer who shot and killed Scott will face charges.

“We're hopeful the prosecutor does the right thing. If not, we are going to continue to march for justice,” Andrew Fede, a community organizer, said.

In addition to the shooting, many protesters are not happy with the city's response and said more needs to be done to restore police and community trust.

“(What) City Council and the mayor need to know is we are going to get tired of protesting,” Fede said. “We're going to start voting.”

Mayor Jennifer Roberts and city leaders have been in talks with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department leaders about potential protests on Wednesday.

Since the shooting, the city has committed to restoring trust by putting new community policing programs in place and building more affordable housing.

The mayor has been in contact with community groups since the shooting and hopes any protests will be peaceful.

“We don't know what it's going to look like but our city is prepared and we'll work with our community as we've always done,” Roberts said.
