Charlotte leaders to take up issue of CMPD jurisdictions at City Council

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Monday night’s City Council agenda is packed with several key issues for Charlotte, including the move to change which officers patrol unincorporated areas in the county.

County Commissioner Jim Puckett claimed the city didn't want to give tax money to Huntersville, and some city council members were surprised by the decision made by county commissioners last week.

On Monday night, city leaders will discuss that vote by the county for Huntersville police to take over CMPD patrols near the town.

That would also impact 60,000 people in six other cities who live in unincorporated parts of Mecklenburg County.

Town leaders in Huntersville said that having their officers respond would decrease response times.

Last week, the city manager said no to the change, but not all cities are on board. Mint Hill's police chief said he wouldn't have the resources to patrol unincorporated areas.

The ability for towns and cities to patrol unincorporated areas is possible because of a state bill that passed a Senate Judiciary Committee earlier this month. It is now headed to the full Senate for a possible vote Monday.
