Charlotte mother seeks justice for son's murder, calls him a hero

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A grieving Charlotte mother met with the District Attorney’s Office this week about her son's murder, and on Wednesday, she spoke with Eyewitness News anchor Blaine Tolison to share why her family can't wait for justice.

Two men are charged in the shooting that killed Tyshawn Calhoun one year ago on Dec.15.

"I lost my son, and it's been really traumatic for me and my boys," Calhoun's mother, Angela Bradley, said.

Bradley said she still drives to Eddleman Street in west Charlotte, where Tyshawn was shot and killed, to remember her son.

On Tuesday, she brought her two other sons with her. Both brought something with them to honor their older brother.

"It hasn't got any easier. The tears haven't stopped coming. The missing him has not stopped," Bradley said.

Dequillar Moore and Justin Hood are charged with her son's murder.

According to court documents, Moore told police he was looking for a man he had a disagreement with and believed Calhoun was that man.

Court documents describe an alleged confrontation that led to Hood shooting Calhoun before Hood and Moore ran off.

"Basically, left my baby here to die alone," Bradley said.

PAST COVERAGE:

Bradley said her life will never be the same without her son, but that new information she learned about the shooting is helping her heal. She called her son a hero after she said she learned through court proceedings that he was trying to stop a robbery – a detail not revealed in court documents. The district attorney wouldn't comment on that information.

"Me and his family, his aunt and his uncle, raised a good kid," Bradley said.

Channel 9 learned that Calhoun didn't have a criminal past. The West Mecklenburg High School graduate was a manager at Walmart and trying to advance his career. It was all to support his family, who misses him every day.

"It's a lot. Christmas will never be the same for us. My birthday on the 14th will never be the same. It's more than somebody can bear," Bradley said.

Tyshawn Calhoun's family is planning a memorial Friday.

Both Moore and Hood have trial dates set for early next year.
