CHARLOTTE, N.C. — It’s no Austin, Texas — or Raleigh, North Carolina, for that matter — but the Queen City earns a spot in the top half of Inc. magazine’s recent “Surge Cities Index,” its ranking of the best places to start a business.

The publication worked with Startup Genome to score the top 50 U.S. metros on seven indicators, ranging from early-stage funding metrics to job creation.
Charlotte comes in at No. 22 on the list, with a nod toward the city’s status as a banking center. Naming such major local employers as Bank of America Corp. and Wells Fargo & Co., the magazine says “it’s no wonder Charlotte has nurtured a new crop of fintech startups.”
Austin takes the top spot on Inc.’s Surge Cities list, followed by Salt Lake City at No. 2 and Raleigh at No. 3.
