3-year-old girl dies after found unresponsive inside car in Mooresville

MOORESVILLE, N.C. — A 3-year-old girl died after she was found unresponsive in a car over the weekend in Mooresville.

The child was found in a car in a neighborhood off of North Main Street Saturday afternoon.

Police told Channel 9 that CPR was administered on the scene, but the child was pronounced dead after being taken to Lake Norman Regional Medical Center.

Police have a lot of questions as they try to determine what happened and if any laws were broken.

"(It’s) definitely just a tragic, a tragic incident that occurred on Saturday afternoon. We want to give the family their privacy. At this point, we are talking to other family members who were there at the home,” Mooresville Police Maj. Gerald Childress said.

Police told Channel 9 a group of children were driven to a local park. At some point after they were brought back home is when the child was found.

Investigators have established a timeline and know about how long the girl was in the car, but they are not releasing that information.

In addition to questioning family and friends, an autopsy has been ordered for the child.

Police will wait on that report before deciding if charges are warranted.
