CIAA pulls 8 of 10 championships from NC

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) has decided to pull eight of the 10 conference championships from North Carolina amid House Bill 2.

The 2017 CIAA women’s and men’s basketball tournament will remain in Charlotte due to contractual obligations.

The decision comes weeks after the ACC pulled it’s football championship game from Charlotte and Bank of America Stadium.

That game will be played in Orlando.

Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority statement:

"We will continue to collaborate with the CIAA to ensure their student athletes and attendees have a positive and safe experience when coming to Charlotte.

Their conference is part of the fabric of our community and we're proud to work together in ways that create meaningful dialogue and produce an improved tournament atmosphere overall.

In the meantime, we'll also continue working hard on the 2017 Men's and Women's Basketball Tournament, which is just five months away. The event is Charlotte's largest annual event, producing more than $50 million in economic impact. We're proud of the work we've done with CIAA to grow this event over the last ten years and want to ensure it remains in Charlotte for years to come."
