Charlotte votes to tear down popular Elizabeth restaurant

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Popular Elizabeth restaurant Jackalope Jacks will be replaced by new apartments.

Neighbors expressed concerns about the appearance of the proposed complex, saying it looked like a warehouse. Council member Patsy Kinsey said she thought the buildings would be too tall.

In response to these issues, developers decided to build two buildings instead of one. They also want to prevent restaurants from playing loud music after 11 p.m.

Developers will build 125 apartments in the space on the corner of Caswell Road and 7th Street if the plan gets approved.

Charlotte City Council voted Monday to move forward on the project.

Councilwoman concerned over south Charlotte development

A well-known apartment complex in south Charlotte was on the city council agenda. The Melrose Place Apartments could be torn down to make way for new development.

The complex on Woodlawn Road near Park Road has been around for nearly 50 years and houses 54 units.

Traffic along Woodlawn and Park roads is a top concern for residents in the area.

Councilwoman Patsy Kensy said her concern is the direct impact this new growth will have on a handful of families.

Kinsey isn't ready to give the project the green light because the neighborhood would lose its character and its affordable housing.

"My concerns that are in the inner city, is that we don't see our neighborhoods destroyed by this type of development," Kinsey said.

She stressed developers are talking with the residents and hopes a solution will be presented so everyone will not have to leave their homes.

"That's why I'm hoping the people on Drexel Place can come into an agreement," Kinsey said.

The public hearing was pushed back to Oct. 17 so developers have more time to talk with residents.
