Sheriff's office accepts Zaxby's apology after deputies heckled

SHELBY, N.C. — The Cleveland County Sheriff's Office said that Zaxby's has apologized after two deputies claimed they were mistreated at the restaurant.

The deputies said that workers heckled them and coated all of their food in spicy sauce.

The incident came amid growing tension between law enforcement and the communities they serve.

The franchise owner of the restaurant in question sent Channel 9 a statement, which said he was sorry for any undue stress it caused the department.

The sheriff's office sent a separate statement, which read, "The office is pleased with Zaxby's response -- their commitment to the community they serve -- and thank Zaxby's for addressing the matter as quickly and thoroughly as they have."

Both parties have said the matter is now closed.
