Students alarmed after shooting near UNC Charlotte campus

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Update Sunday: Some University of North Carolina at Charlotte students are alarmed and questioning their safety after a man was shot near campus at University House Apartments Saturday night.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers were called to the scene around 8:30 p.m. after someone reported hearing gunfire.

Officers said a man was shot several times outside of the complex.

Police told Channel 9 this was not a random shooting, and they believe the victim and the shooter may have been firing at each other after an argument.

University House Apartments opened this year, but the complex is not affiliated with the school.

Some students told us they don't feel safe, but many had a difference of opinion about the need for more security.

"In my opinion the security is a little lax, I think there could be more security guards, more security cameras," Makayla Hartzog, UNCC student, said.

"They've definitely stepped up their security, security does rounds every night," Maggie Mylett, UNCC student, said.

Channel 9 checked crime stats for the area over the past six months and found seven violent crimes that happened within a 1-mile radius of the complex.

So far police have not released any information about a suspect in this shooting.
