CHARLOTTE, N.C. — More officers are patrolling neighborhoods like Myers Park and Dilworth after a spike in home burglaries.
Police told Channel 9 that they've seen a 650 percent increase in residential burglaries between April 1 and May 24.
Last year there were only two reported incidents, compared to 15 during the same period this year, and detectives said many of the break-ins have happened in the middle of the day.
Police said the crooks are looking to see if cars are out during the day and are also tracking when cars in the neighborhood are coming and going.
Investigators also think these criminals are looking into windows and through garage doors.
Officers also said 11 commercial businesses have been hit, compared to none during the same period of 2015.
Police are asking for homeowners to be on alert for their property as well as their neighbors’ and are sending more officers on bikes and on foot patrol into those neighborhoods.
Officers said security systems and even pets can help deter criminals and urge homeowners to report anything that seems suspicious in their neighborhood.
