CMPD chief, CMS superintendent will meet to discuss school safety

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Safety inside schools is a major topic in people’s minds, especially for those with children.

Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Chief Kerr Putney and Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools Superintendent Clayton Wilcox are calling the meeting they will hold on Monday night “Straight Talk.”

The two will discuss issues they are hearing about both parents and students after last week's school shooting in Florida.

The Police Department wants parents and students to send in questions and concerns on its Facebook page ahead of the meeting, which will be held at the Government Center in uptown Charlotte and will air later that evening at 7 p.m. on Facebook.

These types of meetings are already taking place in other area school districts.

Burke County Public School leaders and law enforcement officials discussed several threats made in the school district this week.

A group of mothers in Iredell County raised $10,000 for new safety locks that were installed at Central Elementary School.

The locks can stop an active shooter from getting into classrooms.

U.S. Rep. Ted Budd toured the school to see if they could be expanded into other schools.

"It needs to be made on a region-by-region level, but this is certainly a good idea,” Budd said.

The mothers said they are working with several other local schools and schools in other states that are interested in getting the locks.
