Obama, Clinton campaign event at Charlotte Convention Center Tuesday

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — President Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton will hold their campaign event at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Charlotte Convention Center.

It is going to be a busy few days for Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers, starting with the long weekend that includes the Fourth of July events in uptown.

Then officers have to be ready for Tuesday's campaign stop by Hillary Clinton, who will be accompanied by President Obama as he stumps for her.

Charlotte's big July Fourth celebration will be declared an extraordinary event, a decision that will give officers more power to keep families safe during festivities.

CMPD Deputy Chief Jeff Estes has headed up the department's planning for big events in the past and is taking the point again this year.

“I mean no doubt, it's a heavy lift,” Estes said. “But we feel confident at this point that through some schedule adjustments, we can get through all these things.”

Last year's Fourth of July celebration and fireworks show brought big crowds uptown -- and lots of police -- and everything went pretty smooth.

Police never talk about their specific security plans for events like these but you can expect to see plenty of officers out on the streets.

Estes said the department’s concern is that events like this can be what's known as a "soft target" for terrorist attacks, so they need to be very alert.

“Soft targets are in the eye of the beholder,” Estes told Channel 9. “If you have a walk-up public event where there's no organized searching that's performed, that is a soft target. Whether it be a vehicle-borne IED or another, it is a soft target, and that's what we're trying to prepare for.”

Estes would not get into any of the details of CMPD’s security plan for Clinton's campaign stop, but he said with some schedule adjustments they should be ready.
