CMPD hopes new video will help solve Plaza Midwood murder

Family and friends of Katie Jones, who was fatally shot in Plaza Midwood, gathered in Asheville to celebrate and honor Jones on what would have been her 27th birthday.

Jones was found in the driveway of a business near the corner of The Plaza and Hamorton Place in Plaza Midwood on October 15, 2016.

Police said Jones had been walking home after a night with friends.

Investigators have followed all leads, however, the case remains unsolved.

On Tuesday, CMPD released a video the department produced in hopes of generating information on the case.

It’s a relatively new approach that involves interviews with family members and information on what happened.

“You’ve got to think it is going to hit the right set of eyeballs,” CMPD public information officer Rob Tufano said. “Somebody out there is going to know something. It is going to weigh on their conscience.”

Residents of Plaza Midwood are also hopeful the video will prompt someone to come forward with information.

“There has not been any closure to know what happened or why it happened,” said Larken Egleston, who sits on the board of the Plaza Midwood Neighborhood Association. “We’re continuing to try and work with the people who live her, the people who work here and the people who protect us here.”

CMPD has said they’re stepping up patrols in the area. But, ultimately an arrest and conviction is what’s needed to ease fears and allow hearts to begin healing.

Anyone with information is asked to CMPD or report the information to Crime Stoppers at (704) 334-1600.
