CMPD: Speeding driver dies in wreck during I-85 traffic stop

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers are investigating a deadly crash that happened Saturday morning as officers tried to pull over a speeding driver.

Officers were driving on Interstate 85 north near North Graham Street around 1 a.m. when a car sped past police.

CMPD identified the driver as Trevor Thomas.

When officers signaled for Thomas to pull over, he pulled off to the shoulder and hit an abandoned car that was parked on the side of the road, officials said.

The crash killed Thomas, police said.

Debris from the accident hit the officers' cars, but they were not hurt.

I-85 was shut down for hours from exit 38 to 40 while crews investigated.
