Speed was a factor in deadly 1-car Steele Creek crash, police say

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are investigating a fatal crash in Steele Creek after a car crashed into a tree early Sunday morning.

The crash happened just after 2 a.m. Sunday in the area of Westinghouse Commons Drive and Steele Creek Road.

Officials said one person was pronounced dead after a car slammed head-on into a tree.

The driver was later identified as 26-year-old Kevin Barreto.

Investigators said an initial investigation revealed the vehicle was traveling on Westinghouse Commons Drive towards Steele Creek Road at a high rate of speed and lost control before traveling off the road and hitting a tree.

Officials said there were no other passengers in the car and no other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Police said the speed was a factor, but will be investigating to determine if impairment played a role as well.

CMPD said no major roads in the area were shut down.
