CMPD officers build fence for visually impaired woman

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officers with the Eastway Division built a fence for Pearlie Mayers at her home on Finchley Drive in east Charlotte.

"They're so loving and so thoughtful,” Mayers said.

She's better known in the neighborhood as Ms. Pearlie.

She lost her vision when she was a child and has faced challenges that are difficult imagine.

Mayers reads her Bible every day in braille.

"And the light shineth in darkness," she said, citing the Bible.

She takes her black Labrador retriever, Faith, for walks in the backyard. She is limited to the small area enclosed by a broken fence.

Lt. Luke Sell and other officers made that fence bigger and better.

"It's just an amazing time to spend with them,” Sell said. “To spend with her and to know you're doing a good thing."

Sell and the other officers patrol Mayers’ neighborhood and know her well.

Sell has been mowing her lawn for about a year.

Now they are tackling the two-day project.

"Always leave here happier than when I came and feel blessed to know Ms. Pearley," Sell said.

She said the officers are the answers to her prayers.

"God is love,” Mayers said. “If you show love, you're going to receive love."

The fence supplies were sold at cost by American Fence Supply and were purchased using CMPD's emergency fund.

The fund is made up of donations from corporations, individuals and officers also donated several hundred dollars of their own.
