CMPD: Private school teacher charged with sex assaults against students

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have arrested a private school teacher, accusing him of two sexual assaults.

Jarrett Murgolo, 35, a teacher at Countryside Montessori School in the University City area, has been charged with two counts of indecent liberties with a student and one count of sexual activity with a student, after detectives said he sexually assaulted two female students during the 2012-13 school year.

Police said the sexual assaults did not happen at the school on Mallard Creek Road, but they did not say where they happened.

Officers told Channel 9 that they launched an investigation last week concerning a sexual assault that involved a student and teacher at the private school.

During the investigation, detectives spoke with the two women who said that while they were seniors during the 2012-13 school year, they were sexually assaulted by Murgolo, who was a teacher at the school.

On Tuesday morning, police said Murgolo voluntarily came to CMPD headquarters where he was interviewed by detectives and then arrested.

No one answered the door at Murgolo's home in Huntersville Tuesday afternoon, and a school employee told us they cannot comment on what is a personnel matter, but one woman did.

“I think we need to see where the truth is.  Just because someone's arrested doesn't mean they've done something,” said Janice Woodson, who was at the school Tuesday afternoon to pick up a grandchild.

Woodson said she has complete confidence in the school and will not let this change that.

“I'm sure they will take care of our kids and take care of whatever happened,” she said.

Police are still investigating whether there may have been any other victims and detectives are asking anyone with additional information to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
