CMPD: Thief steals car left running in driveway, crashes into tree

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A man was arrested overnight after police said he stole a car and crashed it into a tree before trying to run away in University City.

Investigators said the 19-year-old suspect got into a car that was left running in the driveway of a home on Arbor Vista Drive just after midnight.

Officers spotted that car a short time later and called for the police department’s helicopter to follow the vehicle.

Police said the driver reached speeds of 125 mph at times. No police cruisers were chasing the suspect, according to CMPD. He was only being followed by the helicopter.

The suspect, whose name has not been released, then crashed into a tree at Rocky River Road and South Devon Street and ran off.

Police used a K-9 to track him down and he was being treated for dog bites before being taken to jail.
