CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The full Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Board will meet Tuesday night to discuss school boundaries as part of its plan for student assignment, and parents are planning to show up at the meeting -- whether there's a public hearing or not.
School board members will be reviewing criteria for the second phase of the student assignment plan, which will determine home school and high school feeder patterns.
Parents have expressed concern over the controversial proposal, and are worried their children could end up going to a school far away from home.
Under the new plan, the following factors would be taken into consideration as district leaders re-draw boundaries:
- A family's socioeconomic status
- The use of the school compared to building capacity
- Average home to school distance
- How to measure the extent to which elementary attendance areas are kept intact for high school feeder patterns
There are still a lot of questions as to how much board members would consider those factors, so leaders have drawn up some additional factors to include, like population growth and demographic shifts.
Tuesday will be the first time this proposal will be introduced to school board members...
The meeting begins at 6 p.m. at the Government Center.
