CMS bus driver assaulted after school stop

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools bus driver told police he was dropping off a student when two men boarded the bus and attacked him in Charlotte’s Belmont neighborhood just outside of Uptown.

The driver was making a routine stop after school Monday at the corner of Seigle Avenue and 16th Street when police said the men burst onto the bus and punched the driver on the arm and head, then took off.

The driver didn’t go to the hospital, according to the police report.

Police and CMS officials are investigating the incident.

“It’s sad for a bus driver to get assaulted by two random people. He's just there to do his job,” parent Nikki Petteway said.

Channel 9 is asking CMS officials if security cameras were onboard and if there is footage that can help track down the people who targeted the bus driver.

“That’s definitely crazy, because I haven't seen anything like that happen,” said Mallory Markitell, who lives in the neighborhood. “Normally, I’m at work during the day, so I don’t see the kids dropped off, but I do see them waiting for the bus in the morning.”

A district spokesperson said the bus had just come from Rocky River High School.

Officials said it is considered trespassing anytime someone who is not authorized boards a school bus.

Police haven’t made any arrests.
