CMS teacher charged with taking indecent liberties with students

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools fifth-grade teacher has been suspended with pay from Billingsville Elementary School after being accused of inappropriate contact with two students.

The teacher has been identified as Taji Brown, 29.

The alleged incident happened during a summer program he ran from his home on Pebble Creek Way, police said.

He called the program G.U.D.B.O.Y.S. (Gentleman Understanding Destiny By Overcoming Your Statistics).

Investigators said that five students came forward from over the weekend to complain about the behavior.

Jazmin Cunningham is a parent whose children attend Billingsville Elementary School.

“It’s just sad that people do a thing and actually do it to a child,” Cunningham said.

According to court documents, the children were invited to a summer camp put on by the Brown and spent the night at his home.

"They can be manipulated so it’s important for parents and caretakers to listen to their kids," CMPD Lt. Tom Barry said.

The children told their parents that Brown allegedly insisted that he bathe them.

One of the children said he could wash himself, but the suspect allegedly screamed, “No,” according to court documents and threatened to hit him in the chest.

The kids also claimed that Brown was physically abusive

The warrant said the suspect came into a room and hit everyone with a belt because he was mad they were not sleeping.

"We’re reaching out to the community specifically for this case to see if there are any more or additional victims out there,” Barry said.

"I think he should rot in jail, I mean honestly at the end of the day it's a child," Cunningham said.

CMS officials said before Billingsville, Brown worked at Rama Road Elementary School from 2011 to 2015.
