CMS discusses changes in proposed student assignment plan

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Ann Clark, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools superintendent, has revealed changes Tuesday to her original student assignment plan.

The plan would move thousands of students to different schools.

Clark said she would reveal changes to her boundary proposal based on parent input.

The board has a lot to consider while residents across the community have been extremely vocal since she first released her plan.

There’s one week to go before school leaders vote on new school boundaries.

Clark touched on two parts that have drawn a lot of parental attention.

Clark explained the plan to pair Dilworth and Sedgefield elementary schools. She also shed more details on the proposal that would split up Morehead STEM K-8.

Clark didn't propose changing the core of either proposal, but did incorporate some parent feedback, which included some alternate proposals.

The district's incoming superintendent, Dr. Clayton Wilcox, said the board of education must listen to feedback in the next week.

"I think you’re going to see some changes, although we didn't really in our cards tonight,” Wilcox said. “There are some conversations internally that maybe there is a better way to do some of these things.”

Wilcox said that even though leaders are still nailing down details, there is time to vote.

"I think it's a really thoughtful process. I think we've got to get there to seal this up so the community can plan and move forward,” Wilcox said.

Last week, nearly 100 parents were inside the government center to sound off on the plan directly to board members.

Some praised the plan while others were furious.
