Common Market finds new South End location

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Common Market is moving to a new location in late spring at 235 W. Tremont Ave. in the heart of South End.

“Our goal has always been to remain in South End as a neighborhood gathering place where everyone is welcome,” Chuck Barger, owner of Common Market, said in a news release. “We’re so excited to continue that energy in a new spot in South End.  We do not aim to replace but rather renew again the funk that makes Common Market great.”

The previous Common Market off South Tryon Street closed in July.

The area was sold for $12 million to make way for a new office building that will house an architectural firm.

The new locale is near the Rail Trail, Atherton Mill and Market and two breweries and is also where 550 recently announced new residences are planned or under construction.

The Common Market will occupy 7,000 square feet of updated warehouse space and patio.

The new design will include many of the features of the first edition of Common Market South End including much of the original furniture, as well as an expanded bar, deli, coffee and quirky market, the news release stated.

The new Common Market South End plan includes an expansion on the patio: 4,000 square feet of indoor/outdoor space with a music stage, natural shade from the surrounding trees and potentially a balcony level, with expansive views of Uptown and South End.

The Common Market also brings in a new partner, Graham Worth, who will help get Common Market up and running in South End and likely new locations in the coming months.

“We are thrilled to have Common Market South End back in the neighborhood,” said Jen McCartney, President of the South End Neighborhood Association. “It is our ‘commons’ and gathering spot before and after work. When you want to find your neighbors, Common Market is a good first stop.”

The renovation work will begin this winter.
