GASTONIA, N.C. — Friends and family are mourning the sudden death a 90-year-old man who police said was killed during a robbery.
The pastor at First Wesleyan Church of Gastonia said Sunday's service for Ray Jackson was to help members cope with his death.
Three men are charged in Jackson’s death: Brian Carver, his step-son Joshua Rick and friend Willie Frazier Jr.
The pastor said Jackson was a loyal member since World War II.
"I know his Sunday School class this morning had a rose in the seat he normally sits in. Our people loved him and cared for him and we're going to miss Ray,” the pastor said.
The pastor said Jackson served as an usher and taught Sunday School over the years. He preached a message on the questions we ask during tragedy during the service.
Jackson’s body was found under a bridge Monday, several miles from his home.
Police say it appeared Jackson was another victim in Carver's series of robberies of elderly people.
They haven’t released how he died.
