GASTON COUNTY, N.C. - A Gaston County mother is facing charges for killing her 8-year-old son and setting their Connecticut home on fire.
Karin Ziolowski was taken into custody Friday. Police said the incident happened in November in Meriden, Connecticut.
Ziolowski has been living in Bessemer City with her mother.
"I know she loved her son, there's no doubt about that," her mother, Vanessa Devitto, said. "I don't think she was thinking clearly."
Devitto said her daughter maintains her innocence and was going through a rough divorce at the time.
She said her daughter wanted to bring her son, Elijah, to North Carolina.
Devitto said she expected detectives to arrest her daughter because she was the only person at the scene of the crime. Ziolowski was injured in the fire but has since recovered.
"I don't doubt that she loved Elijah," Devitto said. "Keep my family in your prayers. They may not want to pray for Karin but at least the rest of my family."
Ziolowski is due in court Monday.
