JOHNSTON, S.C. — A South Carolina police officer has died in wreck as he was responding to a call.
Edgefield County Coroner Thurmond Burnett told local media that 30-year-old Johnston Police Cpl. James Eric Chapman died from injuries suffered in a single-vehicle wreck around 10:15 p.m. Friday.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol said Chapman ran off the shoulder on state Highway 23, hit some trees and was thrown from his vehicle. He was taken to an Augusta, Georgia, hospital where he died.
Investigators could not confirm whether Chapman was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
The funeral for Chapman is scheduled Wednesday morning in Saluda.
