Cornelius robbery, car break-in suspect arrested

CORNELIUS, N.C. — On Thursday, a resident in the Jetton Cover neighborhood of Cornelius contacted the Cornelius Police Department after she discovered an unknown man in her garage. The man had stolen both her purse and cellphone, police said.

Around the time they got to her house, police received calls from other residents in the area reporting car break-ins.

Officers responded to a call on Southport Drive in Cornelius, North Carolina a about a stolen vehicle, while the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department responded to a crash on Perkins Drive in North Charlotte.

The vehicle that crashed was the one stolen from Southport, and the suspect was detained, CMPD said.

John Stamey has been charged with 17 counts of felony and has been transported to the Mecklenburg County Jail.
