CHARLOTTE, N.C. — On Tuesday, Mecklenburg County leaders will help determine the future for the largest Medicaid program in North Carolina.
Cardinal Innovations is headquartered in uptown Charlotte and serves 850,000 members across 20 counties, including Mecklenburg. Each year, the state gives the organization $500 million, making it the largest Medicaid managed care organization in the state.
During a meeting Tuesday night, county commissioners will have a part in the selection process for the organization’s new executive board in selecting a representative for the nomination committee, who will ultimately choose the new board members.

Last week, the state took over the organization after officials said they broke the law by spending millions of tax dollars without permission. State officials ousted the board and are now working to replace those members.
State officials said services and payments would not be interrupted during the transition period.
The new executive board is expected to be in place by Dec. 15.
