CHARLOTTE, N.C. — County leaders will vote Tuesday night to spend more than $30 million on improvements at Charlotte-Mecklenburg school campuses.
The vote comes as CMS is still concerned with overcrowding.
Because 500 students joined the district this year, 32 mobile classrooms are now spread out at campuses across the district.
If the vote passes, $22.5 million would buy land for five new elementary schools, including Shamrock Gardens and Briarwood Elementary School.
The money would also be used for a new high school, while $10.5 million would go towards new upgrades for five elementary schools, including Collinswood, Marie G. Davis and Montclaire.
Earlier this year, Channel 9 was there as county manager Dena Diorio toured the schools in poor condition and saw bathrooms that were outdated. She also looked at the portable classrooms where multiple grades are taught out of.
County leaders will also vote on the future of Sedgefield Park. CMS wants to sell a portion of the land between South Boulevard and Park Road.
The county has priority to buy the land, but if they don't want it the school district could sell some of it to developers to build townhomes.
Tuesday’s meeting will be held at the Government Center at 6 p.m.
