GASTON COUNTY, N.C. - Interstate 85 South in Gaston County was shut down for several hours after a tractor-trailer caused a chain-reaction crash.
A viewer sent Channel 9 a photo that shows the crash involving a tractor-trailer and three other vehicles near mile marker 22.
Police diverted traffic off the nearby South Main Street exit.
Troopers said the tractor-trailer tried to slow, but couldn’t stop. The driver ended up hitting a Toyota SUV carrying two passengers causing it to veer to the left hitting a concrete wall.
As the driver hit the SUV, the cab hit a truck carrying a camper.
The camper and truck jackknifed causing a truck carrying a utility trailer with a motorcycle to slam into the concrete wall.
The camper then hit the guardrail and turned on its side.
There were a total of four vehicles involved.
Two people were transported with non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, Charles Purnell, was cited with failing to reduce speed and following to closely, trooper said.
