Crews, residents continue storm cleanup

ALBEMARLE, N.C. — Crews continue to clean up damage from Thursday’s overnight storm, from trees toppled onto homes to debris scattered across roads.

Some people in Albemarle are still piecing their homes and property back together.

“I'll tell you what, I ain't seen a mess like this since a storm a couple years ago. It was a mess. It wreaked havoc on Albemarle for sure,” said Tanner House, of Mauldin Trees.  “Community's coming together. Everybody's trying to help out."

After hours of work Friday, the roads are clear, the flooding has receded and traffic lights are up and working.

But tree branches and debris still line the roadways, and for a handful of families the cleanup is just beginning.

"I hear the noise, boom loud. It scared me. I see a tree leaning into my house," a resident said.

The tree on Melvin Hooker’s home is no longer there, but the damage is and the home is unlivable.

"I woke up and I heard the noise, went to the front door, saw what was going on, went back to bed,” Hooker said.

It wasn't until Friday morning when Hooker realized his neighbor's tree was on his home.

"(Friday) morning I had a friend call me from Salisbury asking me, was I alright,” Hooker said. “She said 'East Main, you live on East Main?' I said ‘yes.’ She said, 'you gotta look out the door.'"

Hooker has to deal with a broken windshield on his car and a boat sitting under a tree.

"Wasn't nobody in the boat,” Hooker said.

Crews were called to a home on Parkmont Drive after a large tree fell on top of it and knocked off the corner of the roof.
