Convicted killer of 2 CMPD officers moved to medium security prison

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The man who killed two Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers was moved to another medium-security prison.

The Department of Public Safety told Channel 9 Wednesday that Demetrius Montgomery was moved from a medium-security prison in Albemarle to Nash Correctional in Nashville, NC.

It comes one day after Channel 9 reported that the Mecklenburg County district attorney sent a letter to the director of prisons, George Solomon, asking that Montgomery be moved to a maximum-security prison.

Montgomery is serving two life sentences for the murders of officers Sean Clark and Jeff Shelton in March 2007.

He was convicted in 2010 and has been in various prisons since.

Inmates in maximum security are confined to their cells for 23 hours a day and must be restrained and escorted when they leave.

Montgomery’s prison record shows no infractions, which may explain why he was transferred to the medium-security unit, where inmates are given more privileges, including dormitory-style bunking, jobs and self-improvement programs.

Murray’s letter says in part:

"This inmate executed Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Officers Sean Clark and Jeff Shelton," Murray wrote. "It does not sit well with me for this inmate to be seen by other inmates making money, going to the commissary and enjoying other privileges. Treating a cop killer the same as other inmates, in my opinion, sends a bad message," he added.

A spokesman for the Department of Adult Corrections said Tuesday they are considering Murray’s request but have not yet made a decision.
