Demographics released of patients not told about abnormal test results

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Mecklenburg County Health Department released a new breakdown of the nearly 200 women who were not notified of abnormal Pap smear results that included patients’ ages, races and ZIP codes.

These are notable because of Commissioner Vilma Leake's concerns about the lack of diversity within the two groups charged with investigating the cases.

The vast majority of the women were between the ages of 20 and 29. More than 50 were in their 30s, and the rest were over the age of 40.

Most of the women are Hispanic, 67 are black, 15 are white and one is Asian. The rest are classified as “other.”

Last week, Leake voiced her concerns that there weren't any blacks in the two consultant groups the county hired to investigate the mishandled cases. She wanted to make sure the investigators were racially diverse.

Leake accused the head of the audit review committee, Commissioner Bill James, of not caring about diversity because most of the people impacted are from west Charlotte, not Ballantyne.
