Deputies: York County woman wanted, involved in 3 chases in 2 days

YORK COUNTY, S.C. — A York County sheriff's deputy radioed in early Tuesday morning telling dispatch that he was going 105 mph and the car he was behind was doing 110 mph on Highway 321, driving from McConnells Highway and toward the city of York.

The deputy said he ended the pursuit when he realized that the woman behind the wheel of the stolen car was driving toward the city, and that as a result, there was a growing danger to other drivers on the road.

That was the third time in two days York County sheriff's deputies said they have chased Stephanie Wilson, 31, driving a green 2010 Toyota Corolla that was reported stolen.

In the first chase Monday night, deputies said Wilson had her 14-year-old daughter in the car with her. The girl reportedly called 911 during the incident to say that her mother was running from police.

Early Tuesday, deputies said they chased Wilson again into Chester County, but they backed off the pursuit.

Another deputy, who was heading to work around 8 a.m., said he chased Wilson up Highway 321 toward York.

"On his way in, he saw the suspect, spotted the car. He began pursuing her and she did not stop," sheriff's spokesman Deputy Trent Faris said.

Deputies said they ended the third chase because of the risk to other drivers.

All three pursuits topped 100 mph, deputies said.

Faris said that Wilson acted like she knew that if she drove toward a city, deputies would back off the chase because of the danger to other drivers, and she could get away.

Early Tuesday afternoon, someone spotted Wilson filling up her vehicle with gas at the Exxon station at the Highway 5 Bypass and Highway 161.

She left, headed down East Liberty Street in York and stopped at a used tire business on South Congress Street, where she was arrested.

Olivia Edington lives on Plaxco Road next to Wilson and her parents. She told Channel 9 that deputies were all over her road Monday.

She said Wilson was putting people in danger.

"Hopefully, this time, it will teach her something, but every other time hasn't taught her nothing," Edington said.

Wilson will be charged with three counts of failure to stop for a blue light, child endangerment, unlawful conduct toward a child and grand larceny.

She also has outstanding warrants for theft from the city of York.

“She could have had a very bad wreck and hurt herself and those two little girls," Edington said.

Channel 9 spoke to Wilson's mother, who said her daughter has a serious drug problem and needs help.
A check of court records found that Wilson has a lengthy driving record, and has charges pending from January for check fraud and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

She's expected to have a bond hearing Wednesday morning.
