Burke County deputy seriously hurt in overnight collision

BURKE COUNTY, N.C. — A Burke County deputy was seriously hurt after crashing into another vehicle overnight.

The wreck had Highway 64, also referred to as Highway 18, partially shut down for hours.

The Highway Patrol said the crash happened around 3:15 a.m. near Duckworth Drive.

According to the sheriff’s office, the deputy was answering an armed breaking and entering call just before 3 a.m. and was driving with his blue lights and siren on when he collided with a vehicle on Highway 18.

Officials said the driver of that vehicle, a 16-year-old, had turned off his headlights and was turning around in the roadway when the collision happened.

State troopers said the car belonged to the teenager's grandmother and he did not have a license.

Investigators believe the 16-year-old tried to turn around after spotting the deputies blue lights.

Sheriff Steve Whisenant sent a message saying: "The Sheriff's Office is asking for prayer for Deputy Daniel Cobb for injuries sustained in an accident this morning at 2:57 a.m.  He is at CMC Charlotte. Deputy Cobb is pending surgery on his hip with other injuries to his leg and back. He is in stable condition at this time."

Cobb and his family are well known in Burke County where his father retired as a sheriff's deputy.

The other driver was also taken to the hospital but will be OK, authorities said.

Officials reopened the road just before 6 a.m.

The Highway Patrol is investigating and troopers have not said if any charges will be filed.
