Director of rehab camp in Chesterfield County faces new charges

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, S.C. — The director of a substance abuse recovery camp in Chesterfeld County, S.C. faces new charges since being arrested last week.

Channel 9 first told viewers about Jeffrey McLain’s arrest. He’s charged with four counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct after five women walked away from Givebac Ace Camp on Ted Melton Road and called 911 from a neighbor’s house.

Three more women have come forward since then and told deputies McLain touched them inappropriately while they were clients. The accusers are from out of state and some could travel to South Carolina to speak to detectives in person.

“It concerns us that somebody would put their well-being into his hands,” said Chesterfield County Sheriff Jay Brooks.

Brooks said that’s why the ongoing investigation is now digging into details of what was called a not-for-profit counseling retreat.

Carolyn Hamilton has known McLain since they were both children. She remembered walking over to the camp years ago and not getting a very nice welcome from her childhood friend.

“My sister and I went down there and... he told me to leave and don’t come back,” Hamilton said.

Brooks said so far they don’t know who, if anyone, licenses or regulates the camp. Once a camp exclusively housing men, it now treats only women recovering from drug and alcohol addiction.
