Frederick Robinson, 45, returned to shore after kayaking with a friend on Friday, officials said.
When Robinson took the kayak back out on the water, it tipped over. He was not wearing a life jacket and never resurfaced, according to officials.
Officials said winds could have contributed to the Robinson's kayak overturning.
Divers searched near Joslin Pointe until around midnight and resumed the search around 7:40 a.m. Saturday.
Robinson's death comes weeks after another boater drowned while swimming on Lake Wylie.
Just days ago on Lake Norman, police said a woman drowned after falling off a dock.
And two weeks ago, a missing swimmer and a diver searching for him, both died in Lake Norman.
"It's been a lot right here on top of each other," said Officer Zach Smith with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission. "It's just becoming a problem ... the amount of volume of traffic we're having on the lake, the false of safety and security on the water presents."
He said they're doing what they can to prevent more accidents and that includes reminding everyone to always wear a life jacket.
"Somebody saying they're able to swim is really useless when thrown into a high stress situation," he told Channel 9.
He reminds boaters to slow down, don't drive or swim impaired, and be aware of other boaters in the water.
