DNA links robber to Lincoln Co. church break-in 2 years later

LINCOLN COUNTY, N.C. — Many members of First Christian Church are just learning that Raymond Camp made his first appearance Friday, charged with breaking into their church two years ago.

"He probably thought he got away with it," said church member Jane Peeler.
    
Lincoln County investigators said he would have gotten away with it, but there was one catch.
     
They said in March 2011, Camp shattered a church window using this decorative stone engraved with a bible verse, "Let him who is without sin cast the first stone."

Investigators said Camp got cut when he climbed through the shattered window and left behind blood, enough to collect and use for DNA tests.
     
Camp had several previous breaking-and-entering charges and at least one conviction.

"When you are arrested for a felony, you have a DNA sample taken," said Peeler.

Both samples were in the state crime lab, but lab workers had bigger cases and  investigators didn't have a suspect to provide direction.

Workers confirmed the match this week.

"We literally had forgot about it," said church member Robert Hager.

Hager discovered the break-in at his church and missing CDs and audio equipment.

"We have forgiven him for it and hope that he learned a lesson," said Hager.

The church didn't get the stolen items back, but members said they are glad that someone is being held responsible.
