Door-to-door meat salesman charged after being too aggressive, police say

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. — Authorities in Kannapolis told Channel 9 that a door-to-door meat vendor is accused of being too aggressive.

Kannapolis police charged Charles Turner with exploitation of the disabled or elderly.

They said he wanted to sell meat from his van to an 87-year-old woman. Turner was going door-to-door for Capital Meats, police said.

The woman’s relative told Action 9 reporter Jason Stoogenke she didn't have the money so he drove her in his van to her bank to get the cash.

The bank would not let her withdraw the money because someone else has power of attorney over her finances, investigators said.

"We take these types of crimes seriously," said Kannapolis Police Department Sgt. Christ Hill. "We don't want to see our elders taken advantage of in the city and we're not going to tolerate it."

Amy Jo Riggs said it was her 87-year-old cousin, who has diminished mental capacity.

"When I got the phone call that your 87-year-old cousin got in a van with two strange men and was gone, I could've fallen on the floor," Riggs said.

Riggs said his advice to people who have elderly loved ones in their lives to speak with them over and over.

"Tell them the dangers," Riggs said. "Stranger danger, like we teach out children."

Channel 9 was told that Capital Meats has fired Turner.
