Drug suspects rounded up in multi-agency operation

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. — Several drug suspects are in police custody following a Tuesday morning round-up.

Only Channel 9 was in Kannapolis for the operation involving sheriff’s office from both Rowan and Cabarrus counties as well as Kannapolis PD.

Most of the arrests were made in Cabarrus County and Channel 9 spoke with one sergeant who said the operation was related to increased opiate use in the area.

“We've started concentrating on doing buys for heroin opiate, prescription pills, things like that,” said Kannapolis Police Sergeant Joe Yurco. “This sends a message to the drug dealer to the community that we're not gonna tolerate it and we're gonna come after you.”

At one house, officers arrested Glen Wiltshire Jr. and charged him with selling approximately .5 grams of heroin to a woman who was 29-weeks pregnant.

Channel 9 aired a special report in November about a powerful and deadly form of heroin known as China White after overdoses soared 600 percent in October.
