Earnhardt Jr. reveals throwback paint scheme for Darlington race

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Dale Earnhardt Jr. showed off his car's new paint scheme Tuesday as he continues his farewell season.

The NASCAR legend stopped at the Hall of Fame in uptown Charlotte to meet with fans.

In 2015, Darlington Raceway started what has become one of the most popular traditions in NASCAR -- throwback weekend.

That’s when teams run old-school paint schemes to honor the sport’s history and Earnhardt Jr. showed off the retro look for his No. 88 car.

“It’s a scheme that’s really important to me, and so I'm glad that I get a chance to run it,” Earnhardt Jr. said. “It’s fun for me. I love the history of the sport.”

The 88 team is throwing it back to 1998, with a look that’s reminiscent of the No. 3 car Earnhardt Jr. drove and won back-to-back championships in the Xfinity Series. It’s an important scheme to Earnhardt Jr. because so many of his family members were part of that team.

His dad was the owner, a pair of uncles and a cousin were involved, as well, and he never expected such success so early in his career.

The 88 team hopes to carry a little of that magic into Darlington.

The Bojangle’s 500 at Darlington Raceway is Sept. 3.
