East Spencer town administrator says checks did not bounce amid finance investigation

EAST SPENCER, N.C. — A Rowan County town with a history of financial problems is asking for an investigation into its finances.

This week, town board members in East Spencer voted unanimously to order a financial investigation and audit.

One newly elected board member told Channel 9 he is concerned about recent checks that almost bounced.

The town administrator told us Thursday there was a delay in transferring funds to cover two checks recently, but said the checks did not bounce.

In 2001, the state stepped in to take over East Spencer's finances.

The treasurer's office said it failed to properly maintain accounts.

The town-owned almost $250,000 in unpaid water-sewer bills.
