Emergency crews will continue search for possible missing kayaker

Investigators will be back on the water Tuesday searching for a possible missing kayaker on Tuckertown Lake.

Emergency crews were called to the lake after a passerby reported a kayak tipped over in the water on the Davidson and Rowan county line.

Crews found the kayak pushed against High Rock Dam in about 20-feet deep, rushing water. There were fishing poles nearby.

Rescue agencies searched for about seven hours Monday before suspending their searches.

Crews didn't find anything and don't know if someone abandoned the kayak or is still in the water.

"Trying to see if anybody will call in. Any information we can get at this point will help us continue the investigation, but right now, it's just a missing kayaker,” said officer Branden Jones, of the North Carolina Wildlife and Resources Commission.

Ray Sides, a fisherman at Tuckertown Lake, said he wouldn't feel comfortable putting a kayak in the lake because of the fast current from High Rock Dam.

"People need to use a little more safety, messing around with fast water like this, because it can be dangerous,” Sides said.

Investigators are getting missing person reports within a 50-mile radius.
