Escaped murderer's mother: 'He's too smart for police'

TILLERY, N.C. — The mother of an escaped North Carolina murderer thinks he is too smart for police.

James Ladd walked away from a minimum security prison farm in Tillery, east of Raleigh, earlier this week.

On Tuesday, Ladd's mother spoke out and said she doesn't think police will find him.

She also said she hasn't heard from him since he escaped.

Ladd had been working on a tractor, but officials found it abandoned.

He was convicted in 1981 for shooting and killing two men on a Yadkin County farm.

Police have not said why the double-murderer was being held at a minimum security prison.
