CHARLOTTE, N.C. —

As people get off work on Wednesday, many are stopping to buy a Powerball ticket.

The jackpot is $320 million.

You could hear the cash registers ringing and feel the excitement building as people try for a shot at the Powerball jackpot.

“I'm excited, I really am,” Laurie Schafer said. “That's the highest I've ever heard it be.”

Schafer knows her chances are slim -- one in 175.2 million, to be exact.

Still, she said it's worth a try.

“I wanted to make sure I stood a chance at winning,” she said. “You can't win if you don't play.”

Customer Andrew Farley said he rarely spends on lottery tickets.

“I normally don't buy them unless they at least get up to at least over $50 million,” he said.

But this time, with a total cash value of $213.3 million, he's giving it a go.

“You never know,” Farley said. “Someone's got to win it eventually.”

And for whoever does win big, there's everyone's favorite question to ponder -- what would you do with the cash?

“I'm going to quit my job and I'm also going to help the poor,” Schafer said.

“I would pay off my student loan debt, and I would pay for my son's college tuition in cash,” Jermane Holloway said.

“I got a lot of charity I want to give to -- take care of myself, my kids, maybe go on a good vacation, buy some homes, cars, trucks, motorcycles. You name it, Dave's going to live the life,” David Pullen said.
