Family says they are recovering from grease-throwing incident

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Charlotte family, badly burned when police say a neighbor attacked them with a pot full of hot grease, spoke out for the first time Tuesday night.

The family is currently recovering at the burn center in Chapel Hill while the woman accused of burning them is in jail.

Macy McLean is trying to recover along with her daughter-in-law and three of her grandchildren. For her, seeing the children suffering and in pain is the hardest part.

“That was the worst thing. I don't care about my body. I don’t care what happens to me. I just wish it hadn't happened to them,” McLean said.

The incident happened after an argument more than a week ago.

According to police, 33-year-old Regina Terry threw a pot of hot grease at the entire family. Five people, including McLean, were seriously hurt.

“My complete right arm was completely burned down to my fingertips. I got burned from my neck down to just under my torso here and just a couple of flesh burns on my left finger,” she said.

McLean knows the healing will take time. She just hopes her grandchildren will be able to move on.

“They’ll grow up and hopefully won’t even remember any of this,” she said.

McLean said she sometimes thinks of the woman accused of throwing the grease, too.

“I just pray for her soul and her family right now because they're going to need it,” McLean said of Terry.

Terry is due in a Charlotte courtroom on Friday for a bond hearing for more than a dozen charges, including assault with a deadly weapon and maiming.
