RALEIGH, N.C. — A newly filed House bill in North Carolina aims to regulate the fantasy sports business in the state.
House Bill 279 would require fantasy sports operators, like FanDuel and DraftKings, to register their companies with the state in order to conduct business.
Fantasy sports have grown in popularity over the past several years. It's an online game where players put together virtual sports teams from real-life athletes, then compete with other teams.
The bill defines a fantasy contest as a simulated game or contest which an entry fee is charged and open to the general public. The legislation does not affect NCAA Tournament pools at the office or fantasy sports leagues with friends.
The operators would have to follow certain rules, including making sure all players are 18 or older and they'd have to give 10 percent of contest revenues to the state.
The requirement would go into effect Jan. 1, 2018, if it’s signed into law.
