WADESBORO, N.C. - CLARIFICATION UPDATE JAN. 7: The Wadesboro police chief now says the father of a 13-month-old who died in a Christmas Day accident in Anson County will not be charged with texting while driving. Police say that Alex Hooper only recieved a text at the time of the crash, not that he sent one. Police cannot confirm that he ever opened the text message. The family tells Eyewitness News that Hooper never opened the message but fell asleep at the wheel. Police have cited Hooper with driving left of center.
ORIGINAL STORY FROM JAN. 6: Detectives in Anson County charged Alex Hooper, the father of a 13-month-old baby killed in the wreck on Highway 74 in Wadesboro.
Hooper was texting while driving on Christmas Day just moments before the crash, according to police reports.
The report said he sent a text message saying "Merry Christmas" at 3:57 p.m. -- the same time police say he hit another car head-on.
The crash killed Hooper's baby daughter, Lexi, and critically injured his wife, Kelsey Hooper, who police said was sleeping in the car.
Kelsey Hooper is recovering at home.
Two people in the other car were also seriously hurt.
Alex Hooper is charged with texting while driving and driving left of the center.
