STATESVILLE — A father is dead and his son and two young friends are injured after a wreck near Statesville Saturday evening. Troopers are still investigating the crash but have said speed was a factor.
"I figured they'd all be dead," witness John Brotherton said.
Brotherton walked a Channel 9 crew through what happened on Taylor Springs Road in Iredell County. He said he heard the truck first.
"And he started flipping when he [gets to] the driveway," Brotherton said.
There were four people in the truck. The driver, Ralph Workman, and three kids: a 9-year-old and two 12-year-olds. Brotherton and his wife rushed from the home to the bottom of the yard.
"My wife, she's a retired registered nurse, and I told her to get down there quick," Brotherton said. "She came down there and went to [Workman]. And I said he's gone."
The couple tried to keep the kids, including Workman's son, calm. Family members told Channel 9 the three kids will survive, but they're deeply saddened by the loss of Workman. The crash is still under investigation.
