Fight over proposed airline merger could wrap before case goes to trial

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The fight over the proposed merger between American Airlines and US Airways could be wrapped up before the case goes to trial.

The airlines and the Justice Department picked a mediator to try and settle the government lawsuit against the airlines’ merger.

Both sides are still preparing for a trial scheduled for Nov. 25.

The CEO’s of the airlines say they are open to a settlement that would let them merge.
